INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY

HEY  folks.....

This is Akash in this blog,  i'll be dealing with some of the basic concepts of  BIOTECHNOLOGY , its application and scope.  This blog is to help students of  Biotechnology and as well as students of other streams, who are interested in this particular subject.

I have divided the basic concepts of Biotechnology into parts for the easy understanding of the viewers. I'll be dealing with this subjects in such a way that anyone out there can get it easily.

               WHAT  IS  BIOTECHNOLOGY ???

Biotechnology is the science in which we use living organisms, their products and by products as well for the welfare of mankind and humanity.

eg- production of medicines like antibiotics and vaccines from some biological agent.

      HISTORY  OF  BIOTECHNOLOGY

Biotechnology is not a modern science but it has been in existence from the beginning of man kind. In historic days biotechnology was used as a regular kitchen practice, people all over the world used bacteria for setting of curds, production of bread and beer and various other activities. The processes used above for production of curds, bread and beer is technically called fermentation.

    MODERN  BIOTECHNOLOGY

Today biotechnology has a number of applications in various fields like :-

1.Genetics
2.Cell biology
3.Biochemistry
4.Bioinformatics
5.Biophysics
6.Molecular biology
7.Immunology
8.Microbiology
9.Bio-medical engineering
10.Tissue engineering
11.Pharmaceutical industry and many more.....

    SCOPE IN BIOTECHNOLOGY

The applications of this branch of science are vast. It caters to the industrial sector such as food and beverages Industry, textiles industry, biological products, medicines and pharmaceuticals while on the other hand this branch of science caters to the requirements of agriculture, animal husbandry, nutrition and environmental conservation.

In India one can opt biotechnology from his schooling(11th and 12th class) and pursue the same in his graduation as well. Continuing with biotechnology in once post graduation is better  option in this field as you gain more experience, knowledge and market value too. The other most chosen option after undergraduation is to go for MS which is through GRE and other related entrance tests.

A biotechnologist can opt a career ranging from a lecturer to a scientist in private or public sectors. Biotechnologists can even setup industries and become an entrepreneur.
