MICROCEPHALY

Microcephaly is a neurodevelopment disorder. Microcephaly is made from two words micro which means small and cephaly means head it means that the patients suffering from this disease have small head size when compared to others of the same age and gender. This unusual disease may develop within first few years of life. The cause of this disorder may be abnormal growth of brain(cerebral cortex) or may be associated with chromosomal abnormalities. The root cause of microcephaly may be a number of syndromes like 'Down syndrome', 'Edward syndrome' or ' Patau syndrome'.

The major symptoms of microcephaly are mental retardation, delayed speech, facial distortion, difficulty in control and coordination and many others. There is no known treatment for microcephaly that can bring the child's head to normal size. The only way to prevent this is through genetic counselling  during pregnancies. This disease is also rear and affects only 1 among 650000 new born.
